4月13日,1802张子墨同学围绕地球日带来全英文国旗下讲话:

Hello everyone, I am Molly from 1802. My topic today is the Earth Day.

Earth Day is April 22 of every year which is Wednesday of next week. And April 22, 2020 will mark 50 years of Earth Day.

The theme for Earth Day 2020 is climate action. The enormous challenge — but also the vast opportunities — of action on climate change have distinguished the issue as the most pressing topic for the 50th anniversary.

Climate change represents the biggest challenge to the future of humanity and the life-support systems that make our world habitable.

Historically, Earth Day was a unified response to an environment in crisis — oil spills, smog and rivers so polluted that they literally caught fire.

On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans, which is about 10% of the U.S. population at the time, took to the streets, college campuses and hundreds of cities to protest environmental ignorance and to demand a new way forward for our planet.

The first Earth Day is credited with launching the modern environmental movement, and has now been recognised as the planet’s largest civic event.

That first Earth Day in 1970 launched a wave of action, including the passage of landmark environmental laws in the United States. The Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts were created in response to the first Earth Day in 1970, as well as the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Many countries soon adopted similar laws.

Earth Day continues to hold major international significance: In 2016, the United Nations chose Earth Day as the day when the historic Paris Agreement on climate change was signed into force.

The world needs you — and your actions — for Earth Day 2020.

So, Here are some Simple Things You Can Do to Help Protect the Earth:

Reduce, reuse, and recycle. Cut down on what you throw away. Follow the three "R's" to conserve natural resources and landfill space.

Volunteer. Volunteer for cleanups in your community.

Educate. When you further your own education, you can help others understand the importance and value of our natural resources.

Conserve water. The less water you use, the less runoff and wastewater that eventually end up in the ocean.

Shop wisely. Buy less plastic and bring a reusable shopping bag.

Use long-lasting light bulbs. Energy efficient light bulbs reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Also flip the light switch off when you leave the room!

Plant a tree. Trees provide food and oxygen. They help save energy, clean the air, and help combat climate change.

Don't empty poisonous chemicals into our waterways. Choose non-toxic chemicals in the home and office.

Bike more. Drive less.

That’s all, thanks.
